The Assignment: A five-paragraph essay on the use of Comedy in visual storytelling.

The Process: You may base it on our discussions from class, or come up with your own ideas. You MUST have a thesis statement and three supporting points, with outside references for those three points. Also include examples from movies, and you don't have to limit yourself to the films we have watched in class. Cite your references in footnotes. You may use your textbook as a reference, you may use one online source as a reference. Try and have at least one source be an outside book.

The Assesment: I will read it and grade it based on content, presentation, and adherance to grammar, spelling, and style. Then I will shred it and burn it and set your house on fire with it.

Disclaimer: I realize this seems like a lot of work, but given the miniscule scope of this project, it should be attainable by Wednesday after you get back. Call me with any questions.

The Quiz: There will be a short quiz covering the basics of this supplemental text. I will post more specifcs later. The quiz will also cover the French New Wave section of Chapter 12 of Film Art, and what a hero does, since these were absent from the last quiz.

After having read Chapter 12 of Film Art, you should be familiar with some of the names of the earliest motion picture technologies, some key figures from the pioneering days of motion picture (and what their basic contribution was) and the key components, elements, techniques, and/or reasons involved with each of the discussed film styles. The key word here being "key."

You will not be expected to know exact dates, every name mentioned in the chapter, the title of every film mentioned,... etc ... exact details such as those are not the interest of the class. What you SHOULD know is what the early contributions were, and how they were built upon.

Also, you should know what a hero does and how he/she does it.

I realize this chapter is long and chock full of information, but don't worry, the quiz will be easy if you've read the chapter, esp if you've made some basic notes or done some underlining or something.

And there will be extra credit!! Hooray!

Writing Assignment - Rough Draft

The Assignment: Rough draft of 30 second script.

The Process: The script will serve as a blueprint for production. It should cover all action that happens in the 30 second piece. It should not contain emotions or other "directing on the page," only what can be seen or heard. This rough draft should be an attempt at a final draft, in that it should be the complete, detailed story.

The Assesment: Blog about the development process, taking the idea from concept to script, and your expectations for the storytelling style you will use in the visual telling of the story.

Due: Wednesday, September 14, 2005, 9 AM

The assignment: Develop an idea for a 30-second short film.

The process: No more than 2 characters. No longer than 30-seconds screen time. No dialogue. The story should have a beginning, middle, and an end and should be your own original idea. You may bring more than one idea to class. If you like, you may relate it to a Biblical or spiritual principle, although this is not required.

The assesment: Post a blog about how you came up with your idea and all of the positives and negatives that came along with that. As with all blogs on your projectblog site, it will be part of your lab grade.

Photo Roman Project Details

Due: Monday, September 12, 2005, 9 AM

The assignement: Tell a story in 8-10 still frames.

The process: Take still images. Be behind the camera; coordinate with another person (or people) to act for you. Do not act in your own piece. The story should have a beginning, middle, and an end, and should not be an experimental, slice of life, or non-narrative piece. Do not exceed 10 frames. Print a hard copy of the pictures and tape them together horizontally so that they may be accordian folded. Include a Title Card at the beginning with the Title, "by" followed by your name, and the date of completion. Add a blank white Title card to the end of the piece.

The assessment: You will be graded on use of varied shots and storytelling ability. Blog about your experience by posting a Before, During, and After blog discussing your expectations, your obstacles, and what you learned (as we discussed in class). The Project Blog will be a large part of your lab grade.
